About Beach Life
This painting is based on Sandbanks beach in Dorset. The distinct lifeguard beach hut design and long sand beaches was something I wanted to capture.
I liked the quietness of this painting as the beach is normally very busy with people and events. It is a peaceful scene with the classic Old Harry Rocks in the far distance.
I began by painting the background. I was keen to make sure that the background was not too over powering. I wanted to have a subtle colour change to denote the background hills. Next, I worked on the water, but I didn't want to add too much detail.
I think that the contrast of the two colours works well. The warmth of the yellow sand against the colder blue. Adding some red to the sky, I made sure that the painting didn't become too cold.
This painting was actually put aside for a long time to see if it passes my “quality” test. The test is a strong critique of my own work to decide which pieces survive and get put up for exhibition.
Luckily, this one was accepted after a second review and is now an exhibition favourite.
