About Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle is a old Norman castle which was destroyed during the English civil war. Parts of it remain and it sits amongst the Dorset countryside. This iconic castle has always been a popular place for people to visit. I like the unique town as it also has a working steam railway.  The photograph I used as a reference, overlooks roof tops through a gap in the trees, with the castle on top of the hill.

I wanted to capture the castle in a new way. I'd recently been experimenting with a new painting style. I decided that this could be a great way to connect the two and to see how Corfe Castle would look in a new light.

I began with the red outline strokes. It was important to get these correct as this set the structure for the painting. From there, I then began to add colour and other shapes in response to the scene.

This painting went pretty smoothly, which was a good sign that it was going to be a good one! Sometimes the paintings just flow and work without much effort.

I'm pleased that I've captured this castle in a bright positive style. I like the way that it gives a fresh look at a popular destination.

Acrylic on paper. 10 x 8 inches. Completed 2019.
