About Inside The Studio

An artist’s studio is a place of hard work, ideas and creation. I've wanted to paint my studio for sometime. I liked the idea to create an expressionist piece as the colouring and style reflects how the space feels more than how it looks.

I began with taking a basic outline of the elements in the room. The left hand side is a window, and below is a standing heater. Then there are various pictures and paintings on the wall. I've taken the core elements of the room and exaggerated them in colour and form. The large colour blocks, now form a reaction to the space it is in.

It was a challenge to balance the painting correctly. With many shapes and colours, it was important to get the scale. I achieved this by doing one side and then the other, so they matched up in terms of balance.

I think this painting is a great start for the “Tripalette” series (a series focusing on using the 3 raw primary colours). There is a lot more to explore using this different style. I could expand by exploring different colours or subjects. It would also be interesting to see how each artist interprets their studio space as it will be subjective to each person.

Acrylic on wood. 10 x 8 inches. Completed 2018.

The original of this painting is for sale. To find out more, please view my price list.
