About It’s Alright
It's Alright! Its a common expression in English, but I found this interesting as there is a deeper sadder side to this saying. This was my starting point for the piece. I liked the idea of exploring abstract expressionism in regards to what people say compared to what they actually feel. This one is a statement of someone saying they're alright but are they really feeling the stress.
I thought this and future paintings could be good to explore, looking into contradictions, emotion and to help people visualise these feeling who look at the painting.
Inspired by colour field art movement, but also taking a minimalist approach, I wanted to translate the feeling or pressure or anxiety (the other side of it's alright) and reduce these into shapes and colours.
The red colour represents the anxiety or stress of the real world. Under that are green bands. These are represent the thought of being “ok” as the colour green is normally psychologically associated with go or yes.
Below this, are other colours demonstrating a layer or a “skin”. I almost see it as the side of an arm, if it was in cross section.
The peach area at the bottom is the area of inner self, that the red area is pressing upon the “skin” or “body”. The red isn't so powerful that it has influenced the “skin” area, but the painting could change over time depending on the stress put upon the person.
There's a lot more to this painting than meets the eye, which also delves into a topic which is not that socially acceptable. And for this, I think it works well. Its definitely an area I can explore more in the future.
