Nice in France is famed for its Mediterranean beaches, sun and famous artists. On a holiday to Nice, I discovered the old town district. This district has lots of medieval buildings and small cobbled streets. A wide range of restaurants and market squares are scattered within the area.
This clock tower, located in one of the squares particularly took my interest. I wanted to express the heat and warmth, as well as the dynamism of the hussle and bussle of the atmosphere.
I think I was inspired by the Matisse museum which is in the city. His style of bright colours and strong shapes has had an influence on this painting.
I thought that a loose expressive style would capture the feeling of place. Using loose brush strokes and a minimal palette, the painting was created. It was important to paint the line correctly. This is because the more lines I used, the more rigid the painting would become. This took several attempts to get correct, to give the feel of the buildings I wanted.
By using modern bright contemporary colouring, this contrasts against the medieval style and brings an unseen energy to the landscape. The result is something I hope that will capture the feeling as well as the memory of the Old Town district of Nice.
