About Beginning Of Joy

This is a painting in a series looking at emotions. I've worked off the idea that the process of having an emotion can be broken down into 3 parts, the beginning, middle and end. This one looks at the beginning of hope.

I thought it would be a nice idea to capture these thoughts and would be interesting to see how each painting differs in the series, depending on the emotion.

I had to think about the process a lot and to get the visualisation took time. For me, I think that the joy is an explosive shaped emotion, deriving from one point. However, compared to my other painting Idea Spark, it is more gradual and connected. This is why I've chosen to represent the excitement by a large multi coloured ring.

The blue lined box in the middle is broken, symbolising that life can be seen to be structured and rigid. With the onset of the emotion, suddenly the box is broken and the joy is allowed to reign free. The person forgets about the life limitations as the joy takes over their mind. The blue of the background represents the neutral feeling before the emotion happens.

Joy can be interpreted differently for each person. I think the painting has worked well, describing something that can be hard to pin down.

Acrylic on canvas. 16 x 16 inches. Completed 2018.
